|
Josh, a Delta Dog and frequent visitor to Windcrest Elementary School, received special recognition for Fiesta on Thursday, Mar. 13, 2008 at Sunset Station. King Antonio crowned Josh as the first ever King Anbarkio to honor his years of service and volunteer work with Delta Society. "Thanks to my principal Jeanie Weidenbach, Josh is allowed to come to Windcrest as a reward for the students in my class," said Windcrest teacher Amy McQueen. "I am a special education teacher and he helps to motivate positive behavior. When he is on campus, other teachers also send their students out to read to him when they have earned it. He has been doing this since 2002. He started at Jackson-Keller." Delta is a National non-profit organization serving as an international resource for the human-animal bond. The Delta Society works to validate the important role of animals for people's health and well-being by promoting the results of research to the media and health and human services organizations. Delta San Antonio, the local organization, started the Story Tails program in 2002 at Jackson-Keller Elementary with Lola Folkes as principal. The Story Tails program pairs a registered dog and handler team with a child to provide one-to-one reading practice in a safe nurturing environment. "One of my students said, 'Josh is the classes friend. We love Josh!'" said McQueen. |
