Volunteer of the Year 07-08 -- NEISD.net

Student Volunteer of the Year awarded

North East ISD has named Deisy De Leon, a senior at Lee High School, the District Student Volunteer. De Leon vied with six other NEISD high school finalists for this prestigious recognition. She was recognized and awarded by the Board of Trustees at their May meeting, and Sandra Kozero, director for Partners in Education, presented her with a plaque.

De Leon dedicated many hours of her volunteer time to helping children less fortunate than herself. She organized a large project that included collecting more than 150 toys from the Lee community and delivering them on Christmas to children in Monterrey whose parents were incarcerated. Had it not been for her forethought and generosity, many of these children would have nothing on that day.

On top of her community work, she is also a second year Peer Assistance Leader (PAL), on student council and in the National Honor Society. Helping children seems to be an important theme in this student's life as she has been accepted to Texas State University and plans on becoming a teacher.

The remaining finalists also won Student Volunteer Awards from their campuses. They are:

Thomas Stryker of Churchill High School
Peter Tobias Merkt of International School of the Americas
Kendra Hanna of MacArthur High School
Jennifer A. Castro of Madison High School
Katelyn Eichner of Reagan High School
Ariel Valdez of Roosevelt High School

"Congratulations to all the winners for outstanding work in our community!" said Kozero.

Deisy De Leon (middle), a senior at Lee High School was named the District Student Volunteer of the Year.
