Serna Parent Academy graduate addresses PTA

Serna Elementary School held its first PTA meeting/Open House for this school year on Tuesday, September 2. Parents were greeted with a "Meal Deal" offered by PTA and Serna's neighboring sponsors: The Villas and The Park At Ventana Apartment Homes. In addition to the food, the PTA welcomed James Rice, Parent Academy graduate, as the meeting's keynote speaker.

Hot dogs, chips, drink and dessert were available before the meeting. Jeff Price, principal, introduced the campus' teachers and staff and encouraged the families to volunteer as a part of getting involved in their child’s education. Alicia Walker, Serna family specialist, introduced Rice who spoke about how parenting classes at Serna better prepared him to become more active and supportive in his children's lives.

"To be a good dad is all I wanted in life; I thought I was the perfect dad, but my household wasn't happy," said Rice. "Parenting classes taught me that life is not about me or blaming others for my misfortunes. It's about the kids and how to help them get along in life. I learned that working together as a team with my ex-wife, the teachers and my kids, that partnership can make things happen for you. We all get along very well now and my kids are happy and doing much better in school. Stop waiting, and do it now--get involved in your kids lives."
