Redland Oaks celebrates Fiesta
|
Third-graders at Redland Oaks Elementary presented their own Raccoon's Battle of Flowers Parade on April 24 to help students learn about and celebrate the Fiesta traditions in San Antonio. The third-graders made beautiful and colorful Fiesta shoebox size floats to carry in the exciting parade while the kindergarten students made and wore brightly decorated Fiesta hats. The pre-kindergarten children made and wore huge festive sombreros. The kindergarten students made red, white and blue tie-died t-shirts during the week and wore them to show their Fiesta spirit at the parade. Much like Broadway, the hallways were lined with parents, teachers and students yelling "Viva Fiesta" and "Show me your shoes!" The fifth-graders hosted a Fiesta Chili Cook Off. Students brought their favorite recipes and made marketing signs just like the many booths at various Fiesta events in San Antonio. Judges tasted the chili and awarded prizes for first, second and third place prize winners. Finally, all the students participated in Fiesta parties in their room in which they crafted Fiesta art and played Fiesta games. "This event provided fun for the entire school and sends an exuberant "Viva Fiesta and Viva San Antonio" message out into the community!" said Dr. Mary Longloy, principal. |
