District displays work from math problem solving challenges

This school year, North East ISD began providing district-wide math problem solving challenges to highlight students' abilities to problem solve and think mathematically. The math problem solving challenges were given to students kindergarten through twelfth-grade. With each challenge, schools were invited to submit selections of their students' work to be displayed at NEEC. Currently, the student work from the second and third challenge are on display in the NEEC lobby.

"Participation in these challenges has been extensive, and mathematical conversations about them have gone beyond the classroom," said Lori Murach, math program supervisor. "Each challenge had a vertical component, there was also discussion among the faculty that bridged grade levels and into the community." As an example, Tammy Van Cleave, principal of Hidden Forest Elementary, shared that a friend of one her teachers, who works at Lackland NAS, was so intrigued by one of the math challenges that he wrote a computer program to represent all possible solutions to the problem. The program was then shared with the Hidden Forest faculty and students.
