Harris students campaign for Alamo Plaza

Several hundred Harris Middle School seventh-graders recently took part in a letter writing campaign to encourage renovation of San Antonio's Alamo Plaza. The students were presented information about a proposed expansion of the Alamo Plaza. The proposed project would rebuild some of the outer walls of the Alamo and create other improvements to enhance visitors' understanding of the impact and significance of this important historic site. The students wrote letters in their Texas History and English classes to Mayor Phil Hardberger to express support for the expansion project.

"The students were very enthusiastic and did a great job of showing support for the expansion of one of our most treasured monuments," said Denise Bird, Harris social studies department chair. "The seventh-grade teachers at Harris are proud of the efforts of our students to take an active role in civic issues."
