Wood MS teaches diversity, builds relationships
EVENT: Wood MS teaches diversity, builds relationships
DATE: May 22
TIME: 8:45 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
LOCATION: Community Learning Center, 8750 Tesoro Dr.

To teach diversity and build a strong group of upcoming eighth-graders, Wood Middle School will conduct a Unity Conference for 75 seventh-graders on Thursday, May 22, 2008 from 8:45 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Seventy-five seventh-graders will participate in the conference led by district and campus staff. Madison High School Peer Assistance Leaders (PALs) and Unity Club members will also attend the conference to help lead activities.

The Unity Conference brings together students from various backgrounds and peer groups. During the day, students will participate in hands-on activities that promote and teach tolerance to decrease instances of bullying. The school hopes to ignite a positive trend of its students' acceptance of others in response to attending this conference in order to build a stronger incoming eighth-grade class.

Students will perform interactive unity-building tasks, such as "Have you ever?" Students will divide into groups and form circles. When a question is proposed, such as "Have you ever felt left out by a group of friends?" students will step toward the center of the circle. Students will also watch movie clips displaying scenes of bullying. Following the clips, the students will brainstorm character traits that make-up the ideal student and design Wanted Posters. During lunch, students will write a goal / commitment to change the school on a slip of paper. Students will then link all the slips of paper in a chain to bring back to the school.
