The North East ISD Department for Safe and Healthy Schools will host an "Asthma Blow Out!" Health Fair on April 3, 2008 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Roosevelt High School. This fair will offer educational sessions that increase awareness about asthma. The "Asthma Blow Out!" will focus on asthma education, control and its four components - awareness, medication, environment and education.
The fair is free and an opportunity for parents, students and their families to learn about asthma, its triggers, symptoms and control treatments. Local physicians, including allergists Dr. Paul Ratner and Dr. Ted Freeman; and pediatric pulmonologists Dr. Kelly Smith and Dr. Tarak Patel will give presentations. NEISD nurses and Physical Education coaches will give hands-on demonstrations for students on inhaler use, trigger avoidance and fun activities to help them learn to manage their asthma.
Transportation will be provided from the area elementary schools to Roosevelt, and shuttles will run every 30 minutes, beginning at 5:15 p.m. Attendees should call the area schools for more information on the shuttle transportation.
Free information, goodie bags and food including turkey burgers and hot dogs will also be available.
There are more than 6,000 NEISD students diagnosed with asthma, and asthma is the most common reason for student absenteeism nation wide. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation Report on U.S. Asthma Capitals named San Antonio as eleventh out of 100 metropolitan areas in the U.S. as the most challenging places to live with asthma.
