Das Experiment(2002)

Art/Foreign and Drama This is now out at Blockbuster and Hollywood Video
1 hr. 54 mins. As part of a psychological research project, you and nineteen other recruits will be divided up into prisoners and guards. In a controlled penitentiary-like environment, "Prisoners" are incarcerated and ordered to obey the rules, "Guards" are instructed to keep order. You will be thrown head-first into a two-week long examination of the effects of assigned roles, power and control, and you won't be the same when it's over. But it's just a simulation. Or is it? Moritz Bleibtreu (from "Run Lola Run" and one of Germany's biggest stars) is Tarek (A.K.A. Prisoner # 77), an ex-journalist intrigued by the idea of going undercover for this experiment, positive the ensuing interactions will provide his editor with a fascinating story. At first, the prisoners treat their roles with detached humor and playfulness, and the guards treat theirs with nervous unease. But within hours, small conflicts and petty disputes force all twenty men deeper into their assigned roles. As these trivial skirmishes quickly escalate, the guards must explore any possible means to keep the prisoners in line.

A critically acclaimed story about a young girl, with deaf parents, who receives a clarinet from her aunt and is immediately consumed by it. The tension that builds between her parents, who are unable to understand her passion, and Lara threatens to break their family apart. Inspiring and moving. I have used this film often with my advanced students. It is excellent.

About LOLA LINKS

WHERE (IN BERLIN) WAS LOLA RUNNING? The popular German movie "Run Lola Run" ("Lola rennt") was filmed at locations all around the German capital. When Lola was running through those arches, where in Berlin was she? This newly expanded feature tells you where, and has photos of that and other locations. We'll be adding even more photos and facts soon, but right now you can find out where they filmed that hilarious scene of Lola coming out of the bank only to discover... well, you know. http://german.about.com/library/bllolafotos.htm- 'Lola' Locations

MORE 'LOLA'

Our complete "Lola rennt" coverage now takes up over half a dozen separate Web pages! We've got everything from film trivia to Lola links to Lola worksheets for the German class. And if you don't already own the DVD of this movie (and the CD soundtrack), you're missing a great film experience! Our extensive "Lola rennt" coverage starts here:

Lola Rennt book

One of the great things I got to do at the Goethe Institut in Freiburg was to spend a day working with "Lola Rennt".Having taught the movie in German 4, I thought I knew most everything about it.What I didn't know is that there is a book called "Lola Rennt" that goes with the movie, and has the script, interviews with actors and director, and ficticious biographies of Lola, Manni, and other characters.A super resource for teaching the film.Unfortunately, when the day was over, everyone rushed to the Freiburger bookstores to snatch up the few remaining copies.Knowing I could get it from amazon.de or AdoriShop.de, I didn't join in on the mad frenzy. Here is the amazon.de page for the book:

Das Boot: Teaching Materials

Here's the URL for the materials I use with my German II kids: -year students for years; it is one of their favorite units, and mine as well. As a matter of fact, we are just starting it today. I'm just getting ready to leave for work now, so don't have time to get all the "stuff" together, but you can take a look at what we're doing today and the unit calendar that I have posted. Go to this URL, and click on "Donnerstag, d. 12.4.01" Those materials are available as .pdf files:
Note: I focus primarily on DAS BOOT during the 2-week unit, but students are also working on speaking and writing in the past tense, and are starting to plan their end-of-the-year project. That takes care of homework, and fills in occassional odd moments at the end of class.
I also have a collection of links that I use with my unit.
Hope this helps. If you have questions, feel free to contact me at

Weisse Rose

I have handouts that I give them. One of them is a table with the pictures and names of Hans and Sophie, Willi, Alex, Christoph, and Kurt Huber. They have to find out information about them and write it in. I Have another worksheet that goes with that. If you want a copy e-mail me and I will send it as an attachment. I have the questions in both English (German 1) and German. However, I did it on WordPerfect and have not converted it yet. wwurm@hanover.k12.va.com

At one of these sites were copies of the leaflets distributed by the group, in English and German.I divided my class into groups. From a hat, each group picked a description of a person whom they were to represent. Each group also received a different leaflet. The group was to discuss then share with the class how they felt their chosen individual might react if they picked up that particular leaflet.

We did this activity in English because I felt the students did not have the language skills needed to deal with this subject in depth. The movie had such a profound impact that appropriate closure was important. This activity seemed to meet our needs.

I also want to thank those who led me to the lecture hall at the University in Munich. On our trip to Germany this past summer, a few of us walked down there during some free time.Wow!Seeing the actual place where these events took place was intense for the students and me.Patricia Hill

Die Weisse Rose

Translations of their leaflets can be found athttp://www.jlrweb.com/whiterose/.
After we viewed the movie, I had students work in groups. Each group was to represent the perspective of a different individual, i.e. the Hausmeister, a student both pro and anti Nazi, a parent, etc.Their perspectives were randomly assigned. First they had to come up with a set of values for their assigned identity. They then had to read through a leaflet and discuss within the group how they thought their individual would react.Group activity was followed by a class discussion.Patricia Hill

Issues in Weisse Rose

From "The Weisse Rose" one can explore the entire issue of dissent within Nazi Germany. It was more extensive than many Americans think.Especially around Martin Luther King Day it is appropriate to show that film to raise questions about the courage and cost of dissent in a free country and in a totalitarian one. Issues of civil disobedience and breaking the law for a "higher law" also are covered extensively on the Internet. There is a lot of historical background on the Geschwister Scholl on the net, and, of course, since the story takes place in Munich, you can give students lots of background on that city, as well. It's not all Lederhosen, Brezeln and Bier. There is also the company, FilmArobics, which prepares wonderful materials To explore films and which also has a site on line.It was the subject of Many messages here just a couple of weeks ago. One can make such compelling use of film in the classroom.Good Luck.

Online Movie Activities?

Depending on the film you show, you can find any number of activities on line. The "Comedian Harmonists" lends itself to an exploration of the Nazi attitude toward art and music, and there are many sites that deal with what the Nazis called "decadent" art and music. "Decadent" comes very close to early condemnations of rock and roll as "jungle music" You can even
compare
and contrast suppression of the Swing movement in Nazi Germany with the early history of rock in this country. Other films, like "Europa! Europa!" or "Die Weisse Rosa" bring up all kinds of issues which are explored in any number of sites on the Internet. In "Europa! Europa!" one has the "Lebensborn" program, historical issues, like the nonaggression pact by Molotov and Ribbentrof, and, of course, the Nuremberg Laws which codified anti-Semitism and all that silly Nazi Biology that an entire generation of students had to learn during the Hitler years. One can also explore the exploitation of that generation to achieve Hitler's mad goals. ZDF did a wonderful show, Hitlers Kinder, based on this very theme.

Films

A film I have shown on occasion is A FRIENDSHIP IN VIENNA.It appeared on the Disney channel. It has no curse words, no sex, no real violence. No one gets angry about it.It starred Ed Asner and Jane alexancer and dealt with a 12 yr. ols girl and her friend. One is from a Catholic family and one fram a Jewish family. It takes place at the time of the Anschluss with Austria. The grandfather in the Jewish family tries to warn the rest that they must leave, but by the time they decide they must leave it is too late. The young girl (whose father is a Gauleiter , and whose brother has beaten up the mother of the Jewish family) in the Catholic family helps the members of the Jewish family to convert in order that they may get travel papers. It is a non-abrasive way of introducing the holocaust topic (no nudity, no murder scenes, no foul language), and it could be followed up with DIE WEISSE ROSE, which re-enforces the fact that some Germans (and Austrians) did do something. We just don't hear about them. I don't know how you would get a copy f you were interested. Perhaps contact the Disney Channel.

I found this neat website called atom films with many short films and animated features. If you enter the site via the URL below, click on Atom Today, then Cinema  and scroll down to Atom Insider. Sonnenallee(Film)

Sonnenallee is available from Icestorm Video

TRIUMPH DES WILLENS

Der Triumph des Willens. I saw this film for the first time in
Erlangen in 1975. That opening scene was quite a shocker, since it showed
Nürnberg as I physically knew it. More important, this is a film that
Hitler should have banned. It is very up close and extremely personal.
Riefenstahl had access to the Nazi hierarchy that she used, whether
deliberately or unintentionally, to expose her mentors exactly the way they
were, in a setting that they thought made them look very good. It doesn't.
No, it is not a subversive film, but if you view it from that angle, all
sorts of things pop out at you. Those bright lights and silly salutes made
GröFaZ & Co. literally sweat. They had plenty to sweat about!

Marx and Coca Cola

You can get Marx and Coca Cola from Applause Learning Resources. It is $34.95 and item # GI333There is a study guide that goes with it.Item TL89 and cost is $5.(Catalog page number 105) Call Applause at 1-800-277-5287.
Don't confuse 'Marx und Coca-Cola' with 'One, Two, Three' by director Billy Wilder. The latter, though set in Berlin, is in English (with some German). Two very different things (although I like Wilder's films very much).Anyone looking for sources of German video/DVD will find links to many vendors here: http://german.about.com/homework/german/library/blvideo2.htm

Film: The Perfect Storm

THE PEFRECT STORM was also by a German director: Wolfgang Petersen (of Air
Force One and Das Boot fame).  I always tell my students that in general Germans pay much more attention to the director of a film than do Americans. A German TV guide movie listing almost always lists the director, while a US one rarely does. It's a cultural difference.

"The Nasty Girl" Film Materials

A colleague just told me about the following web site for materials for the film, which we'll also be showing here in our third semester classes. Even though they're originally intended for college level, perhaps they'll work for 2's and 3's in high school (or can be modified).

Bildschirm Video series

#24 -- Bilder, die Geschichte machten - 1939-1945

#25 -- Bilder, die Geschichte machten - Seit 1945

#28 -- Sketch, Komik und Humor

I have all three videos on my shelf. I'm ashamed to say I've never even found time to watch the two volumes of "Bilder, die Geschichte machten", but I have watched, and used with my students, the one with the Loriot comedy sketches (#28). I would recommend it, and my students have enjoyed it. I'm not a comedy connoisseur, but to me, Loriot seems similar to England's Mr. Bean. Others might be able to point out differences, but at least that's the general type of comedy: an Everyman for whom everyday situations turn absurd. Some of the sketches on the tape are hilarious. I haven't done anything terribly original with it, but I can see lots of potential for having the students role-play the comic situations after they watch the video, etc. As cheap as you can get the Bildschirm videos through AATG ($7 each?), I'd go for at least that one, if not all of them.

Watching the other two videos is on my list of things to do this summer. This info is perhaps helpful, though, in deciding whether the videos might be useful: In glancing through the manuals that come with the videos, I see that #25 deals with German history since 1945 by examining 3 famous photographs: Marschall Keitel signing the German surrender in 1945, the East German soldier running over to West Berlin in 1961 just after the Wall went up, and Willy Brandt's "Kniefall" in Warsaw. The video-makers tracked down and interviewed people who were at each of these events, including the actual soldier from the Berlin photo (now living in Bayern). #24 uses the same concept for WWII: the 4 featured photos are of German soldiers removing a Polish border "Schlagbaum" (can't think of a word for that in English) on Sept. 1, 1939; Goebbels giving a 16-year-old kid the Iron Cross in March 1945; American and Soviet soldiers meeting and shaking hands on the Elbbruecke in Torgau on April 26, 1945; and a Soviet soldier raising the Soviet flag over the Reichstag on May 2, 1945. Muzzy and Anna, Schmidt, and Oscar video series

Bayern alpha airs this series. It can be watched online with REAL-player at
http://www.br-online.de/alpha/, for instance tomorrow Thursday at 15.45 German time.
There's also some material (texts, photos ..) to accompany the series. You can find it here: http://www.br-online.de/bildung/databrd/. Select Jahrgangsstufe: Alle and Fachbereich: Deutsch, from 1.1.1997 to current date.
The series "Oscar, Anna, und Schmidt" by Langenscheidt was also mentioned. I do not have a phone number for that company nor does their website have a link to their language products division. Is this series similiar in cost and scope to "Muzzy" and would be as appropriate for
6-8th graders?

German Comedy on the Radio

(sic) "well, it's ok" und "it sucks!" Es gab leider ziemlich viel Unterbrechung wegen "net congestion." Ich weiss nicht, ob das am Internet allgemein oder an meinem e-mail server lag.
