Ninth-graders Catherine Garza, Cham Fox, Rolando Rodriguez and Rissa Tovar are among the incoming students to the district's newest magnet program ? the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) Academy. The students attended camp at Lee High School and in team-building sessions constructed a device made only from index cards and tape to hold a raw egg that will prevent it from breaking when dropped from an eight-foot ladder. The S.T.E.M Academy was developed with a $750,000 grant to the district and will open with a sixth grade class at Nimitz Middle School and a ninth grade class at Lee High School for the 2007-2008 school year. S.T.E.M is a college-preparatory magnet program based on innovative mathematics and science instruction.
